Is It Finished?

So what started out as a simple cleaning of the garage has finally finished with the installation of a new set of stairs going into the house. I’ve never been too happy with the existing stairs as they were just plywood covered with a carpet runner that was poorly glued in place. Whoever did the original installation decided that the only way to fix the problem was to use a multitude of staples to hold everything in place.

After installing some hardwood flooring in our closet last year we ended up with a small amount of wood left, and I figured it would be enough to rebuild the stairs. And it was enough, just. I ended up with very little wood left over, and no pieces big enough that I could have used them if I’d messed something up.

It took me about 3 days to build this little project, and then stain the new pieces. Good thing I’m paid by the hour.  IMG_0215

We had a visit this week from Hugh and Karen. We play pickleball with them here in West Kelowna, and have been to their place in Sun City Grand during the winter in Arizona. It was a fun night and we had a blast.

You really can’t tell from the picture, but Hugh is about 9 or 10 inches taller than I am. It makes him a difficult opponent to play pickleball against.

We had another bird try to fly through our kitchen window this week. This time it was a female goldfinch. I originally thought it was an immature flicker, because as I was taking this picture a flicker tried to do the same trip through our window, and I thought it was trying to protect it’s young. It did manage to leave several deposits on our deck before it figured out that it could slip under the railings and fly away. IMG_0202

We’ve been visited by the local deer a couple of times lately and they’ve mowed down our lettuce so we decided to pull it all out and compost it. They’ve also managed to ravage our roses a bit, but we’ve purchased some Bobbex and sprayed all the roses with the smelly stuff. Hopefully that will allow us to enjoy the roses in the garden.

I took some cuttings and took them inside before the deer got to them.

We took these pictures before the deer came to dinner.

And we managed to get these roses saved after the deer snacked on all the taller stems. This is the rose bush the deer seem to like the best.  Hopefully tomorrow these roses will still be intact.

Our grandkids and Jocleyn are in town now, and we should be seeing them in a day or so and they’ll be staying here for a few days starting on the weekend. Should be fun!

  2. Nice stairs! Three days to build them seems reasonable.

  5. I agree with all the comments. WoW! What a talented man you are. I’m glad that the bird was able to be free. Have a great weekend. xoxo Norma
